BRICKS FOR
GATUMBA, BURUNDI HOME REBUILD
The monsoons and flooding of Gatumba from December 24, 2011 until the
end of February, 2012 left over 1350 families homeless and hundreds more
with severe damage to their homes, businesses, and churches. In 2013 this region got hit with another monsoon that took out several more homes.
The average home in Gatumba is made of mud bricks. The cost of building a home is $450.00 in US funds. It takes about 1500
bricks to build an average home. The cost per brick is 24 cents.
An inner village
ministry run by one of the local youth pastors (who also serves as one of our
interpreters) is helping to rebuild these homes. They have five brick layers
on their team with about 40 others who make and manually haul mud and bricks to the
work site. It takes about 2 - 3 weeks to build a home, depending on weather and location.
